Why Reading and Writing Go Hand-in-Hand

An executive director at Morgan Stanley in Miami, Veronica Lopez-Lopez assists families with their wealth management needs. Outside of her professional pursuits, Veronica Lopez-Lopez enjoys reading and writing.

Reading and writing form a combination of two powerful skills, that when mastered early, can be the foundation for success in any field. Several research studies have linked excessive reading with a child’s ability to develop excellent writing skills. Reading across genres facilitates learning text structures and language, which can be translated in their own words. Reading fills out the child’s ability to draw on prior knowledge, almost acting like a bank where deposits of information are stored to be used later.

Conversely, writing plays an important role in fortifying skills acquired in reading. Its significance is especially seen when children begin to link words together based on their sound. Furthermore, these skills are reinforced as a part of lessons that include writing. As children continue to build writing skills, they get better at choosing appropriate words and constructing sentence patterns.
